A single nucleotide polymorphism, or SNP, is a small genetic variation that can occur within a person's DNA sequence. The genetic code is specified by the four nucleotides: A (adenine), C (cytosine), T (thymine), and G (guanine). SNP variation occurs when a single nucleotide replaces one of the other three in the genome. Two of every three SNPs involve the replacement of cytosine (C) with thymine (T).Variations in the DNA sequences can affect how humans handle diseases, drugs, and the symptoms of the aging process.

Though SNPs account for only 0.1 percent of our genetic makeup, they make up 90 percent of all genetic variations. Many SNPs--those found outside of coding sequences--have no effect on cell function, but scientists believe others are more likely to alter the biological function of a protein. This could predispose people to certain diseases, influence how they respond to a particular drug, or have an effect on the cellular breakdown that results in symptoms of aging.

Clients in the Suracell program are given a DNA analysis that includes a SNPs test on genes that contribute to the mechanisms of five key cellular processes: methylation, inflammation, glycation, oxidation and DNA repair.
