The genetic makeup of any two individuals is over 99% identical, yet every one of us is genetically unique. A crucial difference is in variations that occur within the last 1%, termed SNPs (Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms). Our genetic code can be thought of as a string of nucleotide sequences represented by the letters A, G, C and T (3 billion strings linked together). If the genes of any two individuals were compared, a variation would be found approximately once in every two thousand letter positions and this variation is a SNP. Genetic analysis and research has determined that many identified SNPs can be associated with an increased incidence of certain conditions, including many of those commonly associated with aging.
